Pop-ups are ingenious mechanical paper devices that are designed to surprise, entertain and educate. This fantastic new book begins with an exploration of the history of pop-ups and movable books, charting their many uses over the centuries. For over a thousand years paper mechanisms such as pop-ups, tabs, rotating wheels and flaps have been used in greetings cards, books and advertising. Now pop-ups are widely seen in cards and children's storybooks, as well as in reference books and as works of art in their own right.
Following an informative section on materials and basic techniques, over 100 pop-up techniques and projects are shown step by step, with a photograph of each finished item to ensure perfect results every time. The projects are divided by their skill level, beginning with basic pop-up mechanisms such as the V or A fold, and progressing on to more complex paper engineering involving pivots, layers and tab pulls. The techniques behind each project are dearly explained, allowing you to create your own unique designs. Every section includes an inspirational gallery of work from established paper engineers and pop-up artists.
All the necessary information is provided to teach you how to make your own unique pop-ups at home, with over 1000 photographs. Whether you want to make a simple children's birthday card, elegant wedding invitations or a complete pop-up book of your own design, this practical guide will be a constant reference.
