Publisher’s Synopsis

Yves Leterme is a Belgian calligrapher and lettering artist, who has gained worldwide acclaim for his gestural writing and distinctive experimental artwork.

In this book, Thoughtful Gestures, he presents and analyzes the elusive topic of gestural writing, making it comprehensible to a wider audience.

More than 100 pictures showcase his work both as a commercial calligrapher and a lettering artist. In a personal and compelling way the author raises technical issues and talks about his concerns, preferences and discoveries when making a piece.

Preface to the book by the author...
The idea for this book has been haunting me for a long time and when I finally exhausted all possible excuses for postponing it, I set myself to the job one chilly day in November 2010. After all, I had taken sabbatical leave from school in order to write this book.

Ideas came and went as I proceeded. I decided to spread my material over several chapters: some would cover gestural writing, another would deal with my commercial work and special projects, while the final section would present my personal work, the gesso pieces.

For the chapters on gestural writing I drew on my teaching experience. The extensive notes for the workshops I had given on that topic in the past few years were my guide as I rewrote them and made new samples.

For the part about commissions and commercial work, I mostly aimed for a selection that would give a more or less complete picture of the things I did and still do. While putting together the chapter on the gesso pieces, I chose some representative works to illustrate my thoughts and vision as explained in the introductory text.

All in all, making this book has been a most satisfactory experience, and I can rest in peace now, having fulfilled the three things a man apparently needs to do according to the Jewish saying: "plant a tree, father a child and write a book". My happiness would be complete if you, dear reader, would enjoy picking it up from time to time.
