Introduction to the book by the author
- Traditional and modern Celtic styles
- Alphabets presented in colour and black-and-white for ease of use
- The letters, motifs and numerals can be used as templates for your own designs and projects
Perhaps the most breath-taking application of Celtic decoration is found in the wonderful lettering of the Book of Kells and the Lindisfarne Gospels. It is from these books that I have taken the inspiration to fuse two of my great loves ...Celtic art and lettering. While designing the alphabets, I found myself tussling with Celtic knots, fantastic intertwining creatures and sombre figures. I often wonder how on earth Celtic scribes produced such wonderful work in conditions that can only be described as primitive. Luckily for us, using modern materials and equipment means that we don't have to spend time creating our own vellum or grinding pigments!
I hope that this book will take you through an inspirational journey. The first section is designed to take you from the basics of transferring a letter on to paper and how to create a monogram, through to completing a coloured design. You are shown how to use watercolours, gouache, acrylics, coloured crayons and gold leaf. The middle section of the book shows eleven alphabets ranging from a simple calligraphic style through to more complicated letters using animals, figures, swashes, intertwined knots and spirals. After each coloured alphabet you will find a black and white version ideal for photocopying, followed by a page of inspirational hand-coloured letters and an example of how to apply your lettering to a project. The final section provides you with numerals, borders and motifs that you can use to enhance your lettered projects.
Immerse yourself in the intricacy and flowing lines of the alphabets and interpret them as you will. I hope that you will enjoy using the book as much as I have enjoyed creating it.
