I have been fascinated by Celtic designs ever since I enrolled on a calligraphy course many years ago. My studies included the Half-Uncial script, as used in the Lindisfarne Gospels and the Book of Kells, and I became intrigued by the intricate patterns used to decorate the pages of these great early Christian manuscripts. I especially loved the intertwining knotwork designs with their never-ending paths of ribbons. Drawing Celtic knotwork is now one of my greatest pleasures, and it satisfies the need for order and symmetry in my life!
About the designs
Artists and designers have long been influenced by the work of the early Celts, and have been inspired to reproduce the beautiful patterns in their own work. The motifs and borders within this book are rooted in the same ancient traditions, but many of the designs have a contemporary quality, making them uniquely relevant for the craftsperson of today. Themes range from festivals and celebrations to Zodiac symbols, butterfly motifs, sea creatures, animals, crosses, borders and beautiful interlaced patterns. These illustrations can be used for a wide variety of projects, from designing your own greetings cards, posters and stationery to patterns for pyrography, needlework, quilling, glass and silk painting, stencilling and more. Alternatively, trace and colour the images for your own pleasure. You can enlarge or reduce them as required. The simple clean-cut lines allow you to be versatile and add your own creative patterns to the basic outlines.
I hope that you enjoy using the designs in this book as much as I enjoyed creating them. Experiment with your own adaptations and colour combinations - but above all, have fun!
