Foreword from the authors

Creating a new edition of The Speedball Textbook is an awesome responsibility, as it has been the most popular and widely available book on lettering ever published. When we wrote the 22nd edition in 1991, it was our goal to bring The Speedball Textbook into the 90's. With this new 23rd edition we are propelling it into the new millennium with the addition of a two-color format, some new alphabet exemplars, and masterful samples of today's best calligraphy. We are already planning ahead to the next editions, including a special commemorative issue for the 100th anniversary of the book in 2015!

We would like to extend our gratitude and admiration to the one hundred talented artists who submitted work far this edition. We now look to the future with the expectation that this edition will be a lasting record of what is happening in calligraphy today. We look forward to the next edition, eagerly anticipating new names, alphabets, pieces and trends. As we go "Speedballing" into the 21st century, we hope that this 23rd edition will inspire the current and future generations of calligraphers and lettering enthusiasts.

On behalf of calligraphers the world over, we would like to extend our congratulations to The Speedball Company on their 100th anniversary!
