Publisher’s Synopsis

R.I.P. - New York Spraycan Memorials contains superb colour photographs of memorials from Harlem and the Lower East Side, the South Bronx and Brooklyn, together with the moving stories behind them. The victims of shootings, accidents, arguments, police killings and drug-related turf wars may be gone, but thanks to these paintings they are not forgotten: for a violent and indifferent city has also spawned a rich, pulsating urban art form.

With 137 colour illustrations

Martha Cooper's first book, Subway Art (with Henry Chalfant, ant, Thames & Hudson, 1984), was an international success. She is Director of Photography at City Lore, the New York Centre for Urban Folk Culture.
Joseph Sciorra, an urban folklorist, has written extensively on New York's street fairs, popular religion and vernacular architecture.
