Foreword to the book by the authors :
This Centennial Edition commemorates the lettering instruction and inspiration that William Hugh Gordon and Ross F. George created to introduce the newly invented Speedball pen in 1915. As one of the many resources on lettering produced since the early 1900s, The Speedball Textbook is unique in its prominence, distribution and popularity; artists in many diverse fields routinely credit it as their "first lettering book."
The alphabets presented in this edition represent some of the finest examples published in the 100 years of “The Textbook. The 24th Edition also features new material and instructional sections that represent contemporary lettering styles. As editors, we have had the honour and privilege of working with the Speedball team and the many contributing artists who took the time and effort to help make this edition possible. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of them.
Special thanks to Sue George Yourkowski, granddaughter of Ross F. George, who kindly allowed Georges archives to be viewed and used for much of the background reference material and content that are reproduced in this volume.

Bookseller’s Comments :
Ever since I have been interested in calligraphy, I have loved The Speedball Text Book! I still have copies of the last 4 editions that have been published the oldest (20th edition) being published in 1972.

When I first saw the cover of this new 24th edition, I was surprised to see that the format of the book had changed, and this disappointed me somewhat. However, after a short investigation, I discovered that this ‘new’ format actually takes the book back to the ‘original’ format of the 1st edition published just over 100 years ago in 1915. A great idea and a great tribute to William Gordon and Ross George, the originators of the Speedball Pen concept.

This is now my favourite Speedball Textbook! It fittingly mixes new and old diagrams showing penmanship concepts by using new and old alphabet styles. Look again at the list of contributing artists and you will understand why I have rated this as highly recommended for new and accomplished calligraphers
