Introduction to the book:
There are no mistakes in art. Everyone has his or her own creative vision – artful ideas and ways of exploring, discovering, and interpreting. Creating mixed media art allows us express creativity in ways that evolve right before our very eyes.

Being a mixed media artist allows me to constantly be an explorer, a finder of texture and colour, and a queen of chaos – through layers and layers of paint, paper, gesso, and possibilities. Mixed media art offers each and every one of us, regardless of artistic experience, the ability to discover something new with every work of art. Adding a new piece of paper, creating texture with moulding paste, or applying gesso to cover an area all help create a masterpiece, no matter how we execute the techniques. There is no right or wrong way to create mixed media art. lt is a "zero-experience-needed' art form that colourful souls thrive upon. There are no limits, no rules. There is no right or wrong way to explore.

Mixed media art is about trial and error, passion and purpose, imagining and discovering. This style of art allows artists of all ages to create, using tools and supplies they can find just about anywhere... or might already have on hand. Simply trying different techniques and mediums helps you discover what works and what doesn’t. Having fun is a must! Find out what makes you "ooh" and “ahh!” You have the freedom to create as you wish and to explore as you choose, and you will learn so much along the way.

So go ahead – unleash the explorer in you. Be bold. Be brave. Be fearless. Live artfully! Jennifer McCully, co-author of this book.

There are 11 different sections of techniques. You can mix and match from any of these sections to create a unique work of art: Painting Backgrounds, Gesso & Mediums, Art Journaling, Found & Repurposed Materials, Stamping, Stencilling, Altering Photographs, Transferring, Encaustics, Playing with Paper and Adding Texture.

Remember that there are no rules in mixed media art. Try these techniques, but don’t be afraid to experiment with them – or come up with your own.
